Steam away

A steam sauna can give your whole body a transformation from the inside out because it is a very peaceful and relaxing therapeutic experience. Sweating is good for the body and in fact as we sweat, our bodies release waste and toxins through the pores in the skin on the outside of the skin, leaving the inside clean and refreshed and also looking and feeling younger.

Benefits:

  • A steam bath is a health giving activity that helps in getting rid of Bronchial asthma, bronchitis, coughs, hoarseness, non-acute rheumatic complaints and restricted or painful movements of the joints.
  • In addition, again as a supportive measure the steam bath is beneficial for persons suffering from: Sleeping disorders, particularly through over excitability, poor skin circulation, dry, chapped skin, muscular tension, muscular weakness in the subcutaneous blood vessels, and sensitivity to sudden changes of temperature.
  • The moist heat stimulates the subcutaneous blood flow and cleanses the skin intensively, opening the pores, removing dead skin and impurities and leaving the skin feeling soft, clean and silky smooth.
  • Improve general physical and mental well being. And what’s more, a steam bath can also be fun.

Hot oil treatment

There are many products available on the market for hot oil treatments. They can also be purchased as oils and then heated and used in the hair. Generally natural essential oils are the best ones to use in hot oil treatments, as they can do the best to damage dry and weak hair.

Some of the more natural oils that are popular for hot oil treatments are olive oil, jasmine oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil.

Hot oil treatment is used to give hair moisture as it gives the look of conditioned hair without having to condition every day.

A hot oil hair treatment, homemade or store-bought, can be an inexpensive luxury with a variety of benefits.

Hot oil treatments come in two varieties, oil that is heated in either the microwave or stove top, or a package that is immersed in hot water. Either variety will grant the same end results – conditioned hair.

Homemade oil treatments can be made with a mixture of common household oils, such as soybean oil or olive oil, and even the use of mayonnaise. Heat the mixture in the microwave or stove top, apply and massage into hair and scalp, leave on for ten to fifteen minutes for full penetration and rinse.

All oil treatments need to be used with caution as any hot mixture can result in surface or first degree burns. It is always a good idea to test the temperature of the oil on the inside of your wrist before applying to your scalp.

So take a few moments and treat yourself, those around you and especially your locks, to a luxurious hot oil treatment.

BASIC GROOMING GUIDELINES FOR THE LADIES...

1. Tweezing eyebrows;is seen to be the best painless way and easy way to shape eyebrows. Use one hand to hold the tweezer and the other to pull the skin taut. To maintain its original shape, tweeze from both ends Remove hairs that are the furthest down and between brows. Brows that grow further down make your face look sad.

2. Toners remove all traces of dirt, make-up or cleanser that remain after cleansing. Immediately after cleansing apply toner to the forehead and cheeks on a pad of cotton wool. Apply the toner to the crevices around the nose and the crevices around the chin.

3. To keep your skin vitalized and fresh and also increase cell transformation, use a peeling that removes dead skin cells and neutralize unclean pores. Gently massage either cleansing powder or facial cream scrub with lukewarm water in circular motions on entire face and neck. Exfoliating too hard can lead to redness and skin irritation. Thereafter wash the skin thoroughly with a cleansing towel.

4. For best effect on your skin, finish your routine with a deep cleansing facial mask. Select a re moistening mask if your skin is dry. Mud mask is deep cleansing mask with non dehydrating effects. Use your mask once or twice a week for best results.

5. Your skin needs to be moisturized daily; mostly on the neck. Apply from the nose outwards to the hairline. Massage in upward movements on the forehead, from the brows up to the hairline. These movements stimulate facial muscles and facilitate the quick absorption of the product into the skin. Use day and night time creams accordingly for extremely dry skin.

Going green on hair

Green your hairdo and look forward to a healthier, shinier hair while saving money, time and the environment. The lovely hair leave-in conditioners are very good way of letting your hair grow naturally, and are also good for the scalp.Using organic products has a number of advantages which are helpful to both the body and the environment, making it a great choice over the rest.

You may want to know that;

  • Some conditioners are manufactured using negative PH (Potential of Hydrogen) which coats the hair and eventually it becomes thick and weighs down thereby becoming lifeless. Organic treatment never coats so the hair has lustre all the time.
  • Organic hair- treatment benefits all hair types from dry to oily because there are natural ingredients that help to moisturise the hair without coating.
  • If you are an expectant mother, you will most likely feel more comfortable using naturals with fewer chemicals. You would therefore alter to botanicals.
  • And don’t forget that it’s about time we all became concerned about the environment. Organic products are eco- friendly. We as a whole should waste minimal energy on pollution by altering the least in substances.

Skin care is Not just skin deep!

Food is often classified into:
• Carbohydrates
• Proteins
• Fat
• Vitamins and Minerals
It is important to eat food from every one of the groups every day.

The food types that positively affect the skin most are:
• Vitamin A: Green vegetables such as broccoli, spinach. Carrots and dairy products are also rich in vitamin A, which basically hastens the process of regeneration of the skin.
• Vitamin C: Delays wrinkles. Enough said! Foods with vitamin C are grapefruit, oranges, Brussel sprouts and peas.
• Vitamin B (group): This is essential for growth of new cells, thereby making it absolutely crucial to normal skin function. B group vitamins can be found in whole grains.
• H2O:Drinking enough water is essential for the overall functioning of the body, and it is also vital to healthy skin. Drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.
• Antioxidants: increased antioxidants in your body will allow free radicals such as those caused by overexposure to the sun – something that is impossible to avoid in the Tanzanian summer –to be absorbed better, thereby leading to more youthful looking skin. Foods rich in antioxidants are cantaloupe, tomatoes, berries – blueberries, strawberries, blackberries (not the phone), plums and sweet potatoes.

Bob Weave

This weave screams bold! Its suggests sexy! Its a look for the confident and classy, the independent and those that can go edgy yet still show professionalism and chic all in one.

Twist the lock on the face a little bit further and it’s a night look. Take it the other direction towards the ear and you can wear it almost any where. This look is completely tapered on the sides and back with the front sides having the heaviest part of hair.

Superstars like Monica wear this as their signature look and have reintroduced this with a strong following. Ladies who do not want to crop their hair can still achieve this look with the weave.

To maintain this weave

  • Use a wide toothed comb to put hair in place.
  • Spray the hair using braid sheen.
  • To keep the hair in place for a while, cover with silk scarf when going to bed.
  • To protect your hair when wearing a weave, opt for a sewn in weave as compared to using glue.
  • Finally, if somebody gives you a compliment, don’t explain that it’s a wig-having great hair builds on confidence.

Dark circles

CAUSE:Dark circles are the result of blood that pools in the vessels that lie close to the skin’s surface, which is why they can be almost impossible to hide. They can also arise when fat bulges out; light cannot be reflected properly, casting a shadow under the eye.

Additionally, sun exposure can aggravate under-eye darkness by boosting melanin production, as can allergies since they cause the veins to become congested and enlarged. A lack of sleep as well as dehydration can emphasize dark under-eye circles but nine times out of ten, sleep is not the culprit.

PREVENTION :Some under-eye darkness is genetic and related to inherently thin skin. The thinner the skin is under the eye, the more pigmentation shows through. Loading up on vitamin K, both internally and with topical products, is a good option since it strengthens and clots blood vessels to stop the pooling that causes darkness.

SOLUTION:Excessive sun exposure only intensifies dark circles, so always wear an SPF formulated for the eye and protect your eyes from the sun at all times with sunglasses.

Short Chic

There are times when you have to look pretty and other times that you look edgy. This style is all about being edgy. With reference to celebs like Eve, Ciara, Fantasia and Rihanna, they all rock with their edge looks. For such a look, tear a picture of your favorite style and take it along to the salon.

Tell your stylist you want an inverted edgy style with hair brushed longer towards the front. This look is great if you have a heart-shaped face allowing more flexibility when styling the look. Complete the look with oil sheen spray for a style that dazzles.

Grooming cuticles

Your cuticle is there for a reason; it’s the skin barrier that prevents bacteria from entering your body. Cuticles should not be cut off! On the other hand, you can’t let them grow haywire either, because overgrown cuticles can suffocate nail growth.

The solution:

  • Apply a cuticle remover (not a cuticle cream or oil) to the nail. Then, using tiny circular movements, take an orange wood stick and gently push back anywhere the cuticle skin touches the nail plate.
  • Hold the stick at an angle to ensure that you do this gradually and gently, without going above the cuticle. The white stuff left over by the cuticle, the ghost of the cuticle, is called pterygium, and this should be cleaned from the nail as well.
  • Trim Hangnails:Anything left hanging after you have pushed back your cuticles is okay to cut. Using a cuticle nipper, remove the remaining hangnails. Here is the one implement where you may want to spend a little money to ensure that it is sharp. A dull, cheap cuticle nipper will not allow you to get at the hangnails and may create nail damage.
  • Moisturizing your nails every day is important to maintaining healthy cuticles. Every once in awhile, give yourself a treat and massage an oil, or your favorite moisturizing cream, into your nails, up your fingers and hands, past your wrists and up to your elbows. Jojoba oil is excellent for skin.

The fast track to younger looking skin ; Avoid:

-Smoking: Other than the numerous health risks people often disregard with the thought, “it will not happen to me”, smoking also results in deep wrinkles and uneven skin tone.

-Forgetting to put sun block: a broad spectrum sun screen lotion, minimum SPF 30, is essential when going out in the sun, this means every day, even when commuting by car. The surefire way to get saggy, wrinkled and blotchy skin, is to forget to put sun screen lotion too often.

-Too much alcohol:Alcohol is a diuretic which dehydrates your skin and enlarges blood vessels in the skin. Excessive drinking can cause the blood vessels to remain dilated, which results in red, blotchy skin tone, it also causes the skin to sag eventually. It worsens acne, and depletes the body of Vitamin A.

-Sleep deprivation: when you sleep, your body does all the repair work for the damage done in the day. Less sleep, less repair – resulting in breakouts and a sallow complexion. It also causes a lot of stress, and the negative effects of stress would be a whole other article.

Curly weave

The pros and cons to weaving your hair and wearing it natural all depends on your lifestyle. If you opt to having hair extensions to add fullness and length, you should bear in mind that adding long heavy extensions can put pressure on your scalp. If the hair is long and heavy, may result in puling hair out, and may cause long-term damage in the form of thinning and pre-mature balding. So make sure the person that does it for you does it right and does it professionally and every now and then, you should give your hair a weave break for at least 2 weeks without having any hair extensions!

You should also treat your extensions just like you would your own hair. When having your weave sewn in, you can wash it along with your natural hair. Unfortunately, weave hair can get brittle and dry because it is not attached to the scalp and therefore doesn’t receive any of the body’s naturally nourishing oils. To get this look you need either synthetic 18 inch hair deep weave or go for the 100% Human hair 18 inch Italian weave.

  • Once a week apply your face cream on to your hands before you go to bed.
  • For dry hands after washing your hands with soap, wet them again. Pour salt on your hands and then scrub them under water. Dry your hands and apply moisturizer on them.

Hair color...

A lot of care is needed when it comes to having hair colour or hair dye. For African hair type which has been relaxed first is regarded to have been processed before dye. The first thing you have to do is to find a reputable salon that either specializes in hair colouring or Afro hair treatment. Before you have all your hair dyed ask to have a strand test done to see the strength of your hair to take the colouring service.

Once your hair strength is confirmed, the next thing to consider is the tonal choice and the method to which the colour will be applied. The most recommended way is highlights; it gradually eases into the hair colour change and also gives minimum hair damage.

For whatever option you go for, it is important that you regularly visit professional stylist for the right treatment for chemically treated hair, to keep your hair and colour in great condition.

In case you did not like the colour or at some point you got tired and impatiently want your original colour back, seek experienced technician to make the corrections. And it is advised to have some intensive treatments before and after re-colouring so as to avoid any further damages.
